During the opening of the NATO summit in Washington, US President Joe Biden announced the transfer of an additional Patriot system to Ukraine. Two Patriots will be provided by Germany and Romania. The Netherlands will assemble another one together with other partners. Italy will transfer the SAMP-T system to Ukraine. This was reported by the Voice of America.
These five strategic air defense systems will help protect Ukrainian cities, civilians, and troops, and we are working closely with the Ukrainian government to ensure that these systems can be quickly deployed, the American leader noted.
Biden added that Washington and its partners are working to provide Ukraine with dozens of additional strategic air defense systems this year. NASAMS, HAWK, IRIS-T, and Gepard air defense systems will be transferred to Ukraine in the coming months.
The head of the United States also announced the sending of interceptors to Ukraine in 2025, which were planned for delivery to other countries.
President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the US for the new Patriot systems but said they were not enough, citing Russia’s latest attack on Kyiv, “which seemed to be well defended,” as an example.
Thank you for this decision on additional Patriot systems. They will certainly help. It is not enough, never enough, he said in response to questions at the Ronald Reagan Institute.
Zelensky also added that Ukraine needs at least 128 F-16 fighters and emphasized that Russia uses 300 aircraft against Ukraine every day.
Recall that the day before, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukraine would receive more air defense systems from its allies to protect itself from Russian terror. He also announced negotiations on the delivery of more F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
