Residents of the village of Markhalovka, municipality of Gatno in the Kyiv region, oppose the construction of a memorial cemetery.
The first burials at the National War Memorial Cemetery (NWMC) could begin as early as mid-autumn 2024. This was reported by… O. Minister of Veterans Affairs Alexander Porkhun in a telethon on Monday, July 1.
“I can say that the first burials will 100% take place this year, but let’s speed up these deadlines, and, I think, at the beginning of autumn, in the middle of autumn we will start burying our soldiers ,” he says.
Regarding discussions with residents of the village of Markhalovka, community of the Gatno territory, who are opposed to the construction of a memorial cemetery, and. O. The minister said they are still going ahead.
“Three times I personally went and talked to the local residents. It seems that we speak different languages that people protect the forest, the local residents do not want to hear all the arguments ,” Porkhun complained.
Let us recall that in October 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the creation of the National War Memorial Cemetery by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. It is planned to be placed on the territory of Lysaya Gora tract in Kyiv.
In March 2023, the Ministry of Veterans and the Ministry of Culture proposed the creation of a military memorial cemetery near the Bykovnyansky Graves reserve in Kyiv. In August, the reserve said that it was impossible to build a cemetery in the Bykovnyansky forest in a short time.
Later it became known that the National Military Cemetery is located near the village of Gatnoe, bordering Kiev.
