This would guarantee the Security Alliance’s long-term commitment to the country, proclaimed as a “city”, to Kyiv’s eventual membership, officials said. This mission will be under the auspices of NATO and is designed to function even if Trump wins the US presidential election in November.
The mission will coordinate military assistance to Ukraine, training of military personnel, etc. All NATO countries support the idea, officials said.
NATO members are also currently discussing Jens Stoltenberg’s idea of a €40 billion-a-year funding plan for Ukraine, although some allies remain skeptical about it.
According to Bloomberg, several NATO member countries are wary of formalizing commitments to a specific figure and simply want to promise to continue providing support at the same level.
Strengthening NATO’s position in eastern Europe, promoting Ukraine’s entry into the alliance and strengthening Ukrainian defense capabilities could be key criteria for the success of the Washington NATO summit.
