Mark Rutte will assume his duties as Secretary General of the Alliance on 1 October 2024.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has been officially confirmed as NATO Secretary General. The press service of the Alliance reported this on Wednesday, June 26.

“The North Atlantic Council has decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next NATO Secretary General to replace Jens Stoltenberg,” the statement said.

It is indicated that Rutte will assume his duties as Secretary General on October 1, 2024, when Stoltenberg’s term expires after 10 years at the head of the Alliance.

As you know, last week Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdrew his candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General. This finally paved the way for Rutte’s appointment.

Two days earlier, Hungary refused to block Rutte’s appointment as NATO Secretary General.

Let’s remember that Mark Rutte served as the longest serving prime minister in the history of the Netherlands. He first led the government in 2010, and in August 2022 exceeded the record of Ruud Lubbers, who was prime minister from the end of 1982 until the end of the summer of 1994.
