On Tuesday, June 25, the Council of the European Union decided to extend temporary protection until March 4, 2026 for more than 4 million Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression. The temporary protection mechanism was launched on March 4, 2022. This was reported by the press service of the EU Council.
Brussels noted that the decision on the extension does not change the decision from March 2022 on the categories of persons covered by temporary protection. Ukrainians have the right to residence, access to the labor market, housing, social, medical and other assistance.
Day after day, the Russian Federation terrorizes the Ukrainian people with its bombings. These are unsafe events. Those who have fled Russian aggression can continue to count on our solidarity, – emphasized Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor.
Let us recall that in May Eurostat reported that the number of Ukrainian refugees in the European Union decreased in nine countries at once. By the end of February 2024, 4.23 million people had temporary protection status in the European Union. However, already in March 2024, this figure dropped to 4.21 million people.
