About 2.35 million 155 mm artillery shells should be ordered by 2030, but Germany initially wants to order 200 thousand shells to replenish warehouses.
The German Ministry of Defense plans to order more than 2 million artillery shells for a record amount of 15 billion euros. Spiegel writes about this with reference to its own sources of information.
It is reported that the Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius allegedly sent to the Budget Committee of the Bundestag a draft agreement with the manufacturers Diehl Defense and Nammo Raufoss on the purchase of up to 2.35 million 155 mm artillery shells.
The point is that this amount of ammunition must be produced before 2030, but first Germany wants to order 200 thousand shells to replenish warehouses.
However, the document states that within the framework of this agreement, NATO members and Ukraine can order additional volumes, the general framework of the agreement provides the possibility to purchase 2.3 million bullets.
In doing so, Pistorius wants to ensure that manufacturers are encouraged to build additional production lines and increase production in Germany, a strategy supported by the Treasury.
The publication concluded that all this indicates that the German government is very seriously preparing for a possible longer duration of the war in Ukraine amid the threat of further confrontation with the Russian Federation.
This is the second major agreement for the purchase of ammunition after a contract with Rheinmetall worth up to 8.5 billion euros.
The Budget Committee needs to discuss such a proposal in the near future; Coalition parties generally support such large orders, although they may question why the Ministry of Defense is proposing another deal without a clear guarantee of funding for it.
It was previously reported that Rheinmetall plans to build at least four factories in Ukraine where weapons will be produced.
