The attackers told the racer’s family that they had files they “didn’t want to publish” and demanded several million euros.
Two people have been jailed in Germany on suspicion of blackmailing the family of former seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher. The Associated Press reported this on Monday, June 24, citing German prosecutors.
Those caught were a 53-year-old man and his 30-year-old son. Both, according to the German agency DPA, are on probation in another case.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the detainees told Schumacher’s family that they had files that those close to the racer “did not want to publish” and demanded several million euros. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspects sent some of these files to the racer’s family as confirmation, but the department did not disclose the details.
Both detainees are in jail. If found guilty, they face a fine or imprisonment of up to five years, according to the prosecutor.
As you know, Michael Schumacher suffered a traumatic brain injury while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013, his condition is still uncertain. In September 2021, Schumacher’s wife and son said in a documentary released on Netflix that the racer is not capable of independent movement and full communication with the environment.
