The European Commission has published a preliminary conclusion of its antitrust investigation into Apple. According to it, the App Store application store violates the European Union Digital Markets Act (DMA).
It found that the App Store’s terms “prevent app developers from freely directing consumers to alternative channels for offers and content.”
The DMA’s strict rules are aimed at overcoming the dominance of big tech platforms and helping startups.
If Apple is found guilty, it faces a fine of up to 10% of its total global turnover. In case of repeated violation – up to 20%.
Apple is under increasing pressure from European regulators. The company was fined a record 1.8 billion euros this year for stifling competition in music streaming services.
Preliminary investigations are also being conducted against Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, ByteDance (owner of TikTok), Meta (including Facebook and Instagram) and Microsoft.
