From August 2023 to January 2024, North Korea could supply Russia with 1.6 million artillery shells, writes the Washington Post.

The publication refers to data provided by the non-profit organization C4ADS, which deals with global security issues, and information from a transport and logistics company in Russia.

According to these data, writes the Washington Post, from August 2023 to January 2024, more than 74,000 tons of explosives were transported from the North Korean port of Rajin to the Russian ports of Vostochny and Danube in the Primorsky Territory by four Russian ships. These cargoes were then sent within a week to 16 destinations, located mainly along the borders with Ukraine.

12 of them are located near Army ammunition and missile depots, suggesting that what were documented as “explosives” were actually missiles and artillery shells, the Washington Post concluded, citing the opinions of several subject matter experts.

This mass is equal to approximately 1.6 million artillery shells of the type that Russia used in the war, the publication writes.

The influx of North Korean ammunition helped turn the tide of the war in Russia’s favor, the Washington Post quotes military policy expert Michael Coffman as saying.

Earlier, the US State Department said that North Korea could supply 11,000 containers with various weapons to Russia. Neither North Korea nor Russia have publicly announced supplies.

On June 19, Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un signed a new agreement on cooperation between the two countries, which provides, among other things, for the immediate provision of military assistance.

Experts called the supply of North Korean weapons to Russia one of the main items on the agenda of Putin’s two-day visit to Pyongyang; the results of the negotiations were not made public.
