Barcelona is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Spain. The capital of Catalonia is visited by more than 12 million tourists every year.
Authorities in the Spanish city of Barcelona have warned that by 2028 there will be a ban on renting apartments to tourists. Reuters reported this on Friday, June 21.
“Before November 2028, Barcelona will cancel the licenses for 10,101 apartments issued for short-term rental,” said the city’s mayor, Jaume Colboni.
He noted that the popularity of short-term rental housing in Barcelona, the city most visited by foreign tourists in Spain, has caused property prices in the city to skyrocket and that local residents cannot afford to buy apartment.
“Rents are up 68% in the last 10 years, and the cost of buying a home is up 38%,” Colboni said.
According to the mayor, there are currently around 10 thousand apartments for short-term rent in Barcelona. He believes that after the ban on renting housing to tourists, all these properties will end up on the domestic rental market or put up for sale.
Barcelona authorities said they would implement a “robust” inspection regime to identify potentially illegal tourist apartments once the ban comes into effect.
Barcelona-based tourist apartment association APARTUR believes the ban will lead to an increase in the number of illegal tourist apartments.
We remind you that Notre Dame Cathedral will open to tourists on December 8 this year. The restoration of the cathedral in Paris is gradually being completed. Recently, an apse cross was installed that fell at the very beginning of the Notre Dame fire.
