It is important for Hungary that the next Secretary General of NATO supports Jens Stoltenberg’s agreement with Ukraine, Viktor Orban explained.
Hungary has decided to support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the position of the new Secretary General of NATO, replacing Jens Stoltenberg, whose powers will expire on October 1. This was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on social network X on Tuesday, June 18.
In light of his promise (Rutte, – edit.) Hungary is ready to support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary General, he wrote.
Orbán also mentioned that it is important for him that the next secretary general of NATO will support his agreement with Stoltenberg that Hungary will not participate in NATO activities in Ukraine and that no Hungarian money will be used to support it.
According to him, at the meeting in Brussels, Rutte promised that he will support this agreement and will continue to do so while holding the position of NATO Secretary General.
Rutte also assured me that his goal as NATO Secretary General is to treat all allies with the same level of understanding and respect,” Orbán added.
Earlier, the media reported that Hungary no longer opposes Rutte as NATO Secretary General. At the same time, he said that Orban did not even repeat his request for forgiveness from his Dutch counterpart.
As you know, NATO makes such a decision by consensus, so any candidate for the post of the head of the Alliance needs the support of all 32 member countries.
