Most decisions cannot be made without Russia’s participation, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said.
Switzerland intends to discuss the results of the peace summit in Ukraine with Russia held on June 15-16. This is what Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said at a press conference following the event, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
“We have an active embassy in Moscow, and every two weeks we talk with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and we also have intentions to discuss the results of this conference in Russia specifically,” – he said.
The head of the Swiss Foreign Ministry noted that most of the decisions made could not be made without the participation of Russia.
At the same time, Cassis emphasized that from the point of view of the possible interest of the Russian side and building a path to peace that three topics were chosen for the first summit – nuclear security, food security and the release of prisoners , as well as thousands of children.
The minister added that for this reason, for example, the issue of territorial integrity has not become an issue, because the prospects for its discussion between the parties are hopeless.
Commenting on why the summit’s final document was a joint communiqué and not a declaration, Cassis said that “in diplomacy, every word counts.”
“A joint communiqué is less binding than a declaration, that’s for sure. And since it’s the first step, the idea is to take one small step at a time to get as many people as possible. And in I think that’s what almost everybody involved in – only seven or eight people said no – it’s a big success… So it’s still a basis, a basis on which we can build some confidence to do some step forward,” said the Swiss Foreign Minister.
Let’s recall that on June 15-16, the historic Global Peace Summit, organized by Ukraine, took place in Switzerland. Zelensky said the peace summit could have practical steps towards peace.
According to him, after the first Peace Summit, it will be months, not years, before the next summit is held. There will be Russian representatives there. Several countries have already expressed their interest in hosting it.
As is known, 80 countries and four organizations signed a joint communique of the Peace Summit. The Office of the President released the full text of the document.
