In Poland’s Podlaskie Voivodeship, customs officials intercepted a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes from Russia, which a Belarusian tried to import from Lithuania under the guise of eggs. This was reported on Friday, June 14, by the Polish publication RMF24.
It is reported that Polish customs officials discovered smuggled cargo at the Lithuanian border with Poland. The 35-year-old Belarusian’s documents stated that he was carrying eggs in the truck, but a check on the scanners showed that the truck’s contents were different.
Inside the car were 520 thousand packs of cigarettes made in Russia with an estimated value of 8 million Polish zlotys (1.8 million euros).
The driver was jailed for three months. It was reported that for knowingly carrying such contraband he could face up to 10 years in prison.
It was previously reported that BEB employees in the Volyn region exposed a group of people who organized the sale of smuggled goods. One of the defendants is in jail.
