In the future, the Alliance will undertake international coordination of arms supplies and training for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
NATO on June 13 adopted an “operational plan for expanding support to Ukraine,” which describes NATO’s greater role in providing weapons and training to Ukraine’s military. DPA reported this, citing sources in the Alliance.
The plan, in particular, provides that in the future the Alliance will take over the international coordination of arms supplies and training for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is assumed that NATO will create an analogue of the American Security Assistance Group in Ukraine (SAG-U), which operates from the European headquarters of the US Armed Forces in Wiesbaden, Germany and has approximately 300 military personnel.
The document was reportedly adopted by written procedure on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels and will be made public on Friday after official approval by the ministers.
The approval of the “operational plan” was blocked by Hungary for a long time. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban pointed out the fact that the initiative of the Alliance could lead to “direct confrontation” with Russia. However, the day before, Orban met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and agreed to lift the veto in exchange for a promise that Hungary would not participate in training Ukrainians or finance arms supplies.
We remind you that the North Atlantic Alliance and Ukraine are planning to sign an agreement on expanding cooperation in the field of defense technologies and sharing intelligence about Russia’s capabilities in the field of electronic warfare.
