The United States believes that in order to join, Ukraine still needs to “do some work” to meet the standards and carry out the reforms required for membership.
President Joe Biden’s words that Ukraine does not need to join NATO to achieve peace do not mean that the United States has changed its position on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance. US Permanent Representative to NATO Julian Smith said this on Wednesday, June 12. His words were quoted on the website of the US State Department.
This is Smith’s comment on the statement of President Joe Biden, who previously said that peace in Ukraine should be such that the Russian Federation cannot attack again, and this does not mean the country’s membership in NATO.
“This means that the States are confident that Kyiv should become a member of the bloc, but for this some work needs to be done,” he said.
The US Permanent Representative to NATO recalled that US President Joe Biden’s position regarding Ukraine’s membership in NATO remains clear: he, like other members of the Alliance, does not deviate from the desire to admit Ukraine to NATO.
“This was confirmed at the Vilnius summit last year, when the members of the Alliance said that Ukraine’s future is in NATO. I think you will see similar language at this year’s NATO summit, agreed by all 32 member countries of the Alliance, another paragraph or two about Ukraine and its desire to become a member,” he said.
The American representative to NATO also added that Ukraine, together with its allies, is working to introduce the necessary reforms, and the United States welcomes Kyiv’s progress in this direction.
As you know, the North Atlantic Alliance and Ukraine plan to sign an agreement to expand cooperation in the field of defense technologies and exchange intelligence on Russia’s capabilities in the field of electronic warfare.
NATO will create a post of special representative in Ukraine
