Currently, the world is experiencing the largest number of armed conflicts since the Second World War – more than fifty.
There are 56 armed conflicts going on in the world, where people are dying and suffering. At the same time, 92 countries are involved in them – inside or outside their borders. This was stated on Wednesday, June 12, in the Global Peace Index report from the international research Australian Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), writes Ukrinform.
The authors note that in 97 countries, the situation has worsened more than at any time since the Global Index was launched in 2008. And 108 countries have become more militarized.
The report’s authors also estimated that the global economic impact of violence rose to $19.1 trillion. dollars, which by the end of 2023 will reach 13.5% of global GDP.
It is estimated that due to military conflicts, 110 million people have become refugees or internally displaced persons.
It was noted that if in 2019 the conflicts in Ethiopia, Ukraine and Gaza were defined as “minor”, then in 2023 almost three quarters of the world’s deaths from wars occurred in Ukraine and Gaza.
Iceland remains the most peaceful country, topping the ranking since 2008. It is followed by Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and for the first time Singapore is in the top five. Yemen ranks Afghanistan as the most peaceful country in the world, followed by Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Analysts also analyzed the countries’ military capabilities and concluded that the United States has three times the military capabilities of China, followed closely by Russia.
As you know, on June 15-16 the international Peace Summit will take place in Switzerland in the city of Bürgenstock. It is expected to be attended by representatives of more than 100 states and organizations from all continents.
Previously, the Office of the President said that Russia’s participation in the first Peace Summit is not expected, but there is a possibility that its representatives will be at the second summit.
Meanwhile, China and Brazil are promoting an alternative to the Peace Summit with equal participation of all parties.
