A jury has found US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, guilty of lying about his drug use when buying a gun.
In the United States, trials against former and current presidents continue. Then Donald Trump was found guilty of a felony, and now Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has been found to have lied about his drug use when buying a gun.
Election influence
The essence of the case against 54-year-old Biden Jr. was in 2018, as a drug addict (he used crack), he kept it when he bought a gun.
Hunter Biden’s conviction for lying about his drug use while applying for a gun license is unlikely to affect the presidential campaign or how Americans vote in the November election, experts say. But the guilty verdict could be a severe personal blow for the US president.
After the verdict was announced, the judge said only that the verdict could be handed down within 120 days, and did not set a specific date.
In theory, Biden faces up to 25 years in prison, but in practice, according to lawyers, if he is sent to prison, it is unlikely to be more than a couple of years.
Not a thing
As South Texas College of Law professor Drew Stevenson explained, the most serious of the charges—possession of a weapon while using drugs—carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, but Professor Stevenson’s observations are suggests that the actual sentence imposed under this charge of 10 years would not exceed five years, and that only seven people, truly dangerous criminals, received it.
As for the false information on the firearms application form, Professor Stevenson could not recall the actual terms for such a charge.
However, in September, Biden Jr. faced on trial in a potentially more important political case – tax evasion on $1.5 million in income. For this, he faces up to 17 years in prison.
Special counsel David Weiss said the president’s son “spent millions of dollars on a lavish lifestyle instead of paying his tax bills.”
The trial, which begins months before the election, may not be as emotional as the one in the Delaware court, but Hunter’s foreign dealings and financial ties to his father are the subject of intense scrutiny from Republican opponents of Biden. Many Americans have experienced drug addiction and its consequences in their lives. But suspicions of financial dishonesty and tax fraud may make the American voting public less sympathetic.
Biden Sr. Reaction
President Joe Biden, after announcing the verdict in his son’s case, issued a statement in which he reiterated that he would accept any court decision.
The President has the right to pardon his son, but he has already said he will not, even though he has not abandoned Hunter and supports him.
“Like I said last week, I’m the president, but I’m also a father. Jill and I love our son and are very proud of the man he has become. Jill and I will always love and support Hunter, as will the rest of our family,” the president said in a statement.
