American swimmer Anita Alvarez fainted underwater at the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest on Wednesday and was rescued by a coach. (See photos below.)
American coach Andrea Fuentes told the Spanish edition of MARCA that she noticed her athlete was not breathing and, when rescuers did not respond, she jumped to her rescue.
Fuentes called it a “great fear,” but Alvarez posted on Instagram that it was “fine”.
The pictures show a horrible sequence:

Fuentes estimated that Alvarez was not breathing for at least two minutes “Because his lungs were full of water.”
“Our sport is no different from the others, just in the pool, we push the boundaries and sometimes we find them,” Fuentes wrote on his Instagram page USA Artistic Swimming (formerly synchronized swimming) on Thursday of the morning.
Fuentes starred in A Similar Survival on Alvarez At last year’s Olympic qualifiers in Spain – and Alvarez has had at least one prior association, but not in competition.
Alvarez, 25, a 2016 Rio Olympian who dived into his third World Cup, has recovered and hopes to compete in team freestyle on Friday. But his status has not yet been determined.
“Alvarez will decide with the doctor if he can swim in the free team final,” Fuentes added.
