The decision was in response to calls from Kyiv to strengthen air defense as the country battles a heavy Russian offensive in the northeastern Kharkov region.
US President Joe Biden made the decision after a series of meetings and debates to send the second American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine. The New York Times reported this on Tuesday, June 11, citing unnamed senior American administration and military officials.
It noted that Biden’s decision was made last week after high-level meetings and internal debate about meeting Ukraine’s urgent air defense needs without jeopardizing US combat readiness.
“The new Patriot system – the second the United States has sent to Ukraine – will come from Poland, where it protects rotational forces of US troops returning to the United States,” the officials said.
The system could be deployed to Ukrainian front lines within the next few days, depending on the maintenance or modifications it needs, according to US officials.
We remind you that, according to media reports, Germany will be able to transfer the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine no earlier than the end of June. The delivery may coincide with the transfer of F-16 fighters.
It has also been reported that Ukraine has received Patriot air defense missiles from its allies.
