The question of when and if Ukraine will be invited to NATO remains a hot topic among Alliance officials.
The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) will create a post of special representative in Ukraine. The American magazine Foreign Policy writes about this on Friday, June 7.
According to sources, such a representative is in Kyiv, as NATO plans to increase its long-term commitment to Ukraine amid the war with Russia.
“The idea is still being discussed and should be announced at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington,” the publication points out.
This representative will coordinate support for Ukraine from the Alliance, including military aid flows from various Western countries.
“We are looking for ways to institutionalize some of the bilateral support that is coming to Ukraine and bring it to NATO to ensure greater consistency in that assistance and adequate burden sharing across the Alliance in our collective support to Ukraine,” said US Ambassador to NATO Julianne. Smith.
At the same time, some countries of the Alliance oppose this idea. In their opinion, the creation of such a position in Kyiv is more like a “consolation prize” while Ukraine awaits full membership in the organization.
The NATO summit in Washington will discuss three main issues related to Ukraine. At the same time, the issue of the country’s membership in the Alliance will not be considered.
