They want to start the process before Hungary takes over the presidency of the European Union, the sources said.

The European Commission will recommend starting EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in June. This was reported by the British newspaper Financial Times on Friday, June 7.

According to three informed sources, the EC insisted that formal accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova would begin this month to send a positive signal to both countries.

According to the newspaper, the European Commission will announce its decision on June 7. In particular, it will say that Ukraine meets previously unfulfilled criteria, including anti-corruption measures, restrictions on political lobbying, declaration rules asset for government officials and protection of languages used by national minorities.

The commission’s recommendation requires a unanimous decision from all 27 countries of the European Union. Hungary is expected to oppose it due to alleged violations of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

From July 1, Hungary will take the EU presidency. This will give him extra leverage. The Belgian EU Presidency therefore hopes to hold the first round of accession negotiations on June 25.

Before this, Radio Liberty’s Europe editor Rikard Jozwiak also reported that the EC’s oral assessment should be positive for Ukraine and Moldova.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna said that Ukraine has fulfilled all the requirements and recommendations of the European Commission. Only organizational issues related to the actual opening of negotiations remain.
