Political commentator David Ignash said the American leader contacted the leader of the People’s Republic of China before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping was ready to provide military aid to Russia at the start of a full-scale war, but US President Joe Biden forced him to change his mind. Political commentator David Ignash said this in a column for The Washington Post, citing his sources.
Less than three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, China began publicly calling for peace, but Moscow asked Beijing for arms, an observer reported.
“They (the Chinese – ed.) were ready for delivery when Biden called Xi with a warning: the United States will react if they find out that China is transferring weapons to Russia,” assured Ignes.
The unnamed interlocutors familiar with the situation noted that the leader of the PRC was upset by the call from the American president, but he decided to stop direct arms supplies to Russia.
US officials said Xi appointed former Vice Premier Liu He, one of the Chinese leader’s most trusted negotiators with the West, to oversee China’s covert aid to Russia.
