Russian officials do not know if the police will become a militia. But the Russian Federation already has a State Traffic Inspectorate.
In Russia, the Soviet name of the State Road Safety Inspectorate (GIBDD) was restored. Now it will once again become the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI). The Moscow Times writes about it on Tuesday, May 28.
“We became the State Traffic Inspectorate, we abolish the traffic police, we control it legislatively The police, I don’t know (if this Soviet name will return,” ed.), but the State Traffic Inspectorate already exists,” said the head of the department, Mikhail Chernikov.
According to him, the current regulatory documents are being carried out in accordance with the new name.
The State Automobile Inspectorate was established in the USSR in 1936 and is responsible for monitoring and road safety. In 1998, in Russia, the traffic police was renamed the traffic police to get rid of the negative attitude towards inspection employees.
In Ukraine, the traffic police operated until November 2015 its duties were transferred to the patrol police.
