The tightened security comes as a series of recent arrests highlight concerns about sabotage operations.
In Poland, authorities are tightening security measures at the main transit hub for military aid to Ukraine. It comes as a series of arrests this week highlight concerns about Russian-backed sabotage operations, Bloomberg wrote.
Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak confirmed that measures are being taken to strengthen security around Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport, which is located less than 100 km from the Ukrainian border. The facility handles up to 90% of Western cargo bound for Ukraine and has been a key stop for foreign officials traveling to Kyiv.
“We are dealing with a foreign state that is carrying out hostile and – in military terms – kinetic actions on Polish territory that have never happened before,” said Siemoniak.
The minister added that Poland is grappling with an unprecedented level of foreign interference after Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the detention of 12 people as part of a fight against possible acts of sabotage directed from Russia.
The role of Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport in Kremlin-backed operations was revealed in April. At the time, prosecutors said they had arrested a man accused of facilitating a plot to kill Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
