From the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, Ukraine has been limited in its right to use weapons received from Western countries to attack Russian territory.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French Parliament, Jean-Louis Bourlange, called on Paris to lift the ban on Ukrainian strikes using French weapons on Russian territory, Le Figaro reports.
As Le Figaro notes, Bourlange wrote a letter to the French leadership in which he called on them to abandon “deterrence and make a decision” following the example of Britain, which allowed Ukrainian troops to attack its weapons on the territory of Russia.
“It seems that the time has come… The right to self-defense does not include the right to asylum against the aggressor’s territory,” he stressed, adding that the change in doctrine would be completely legal, as it would end the the asymmetry between the aggressor and the victim.
At the same time, Bourlange emphasized that neither France nor other Western partners of Ukraine want to go to war with the Russian Federation.
“Therefore, it is not a question that they intervened in the theater of operations, but the removal of an unjust ban,” he wrote in his letter.
Let’s remember that since the beginning of the mass invasion of Russia, Ukraine has been limited in the right to use weapons received from Western countries to attack Russian territory. Usually in the West, this restriction is explained by the fact that they transfer weapons to Ukraine to defend themselves against Russia, and not to attack it.
