The occupation of this city is one of the tactical goals of the first phase of Russia’s offensive attempt in the north of the Kharkov region. In particular, the invaders targeted bridges over the Seversky Donets River to quickly isolate the battlefield east of the river to increase their chances of destroying Ukrainian land lines of communication and quickly capturing Volchansk. This is discussed in a new report from the American Institute for the Study of War.
Experts also note that the Russians are spraying more in Volchansk than in other places along the border.
ISW believes that the Russian command wants to capture this city because it is the largest populated area directly on the border. The occupation of Volchanskaya will allow the enemy to open a bridgehead close to the Russian rear to prepare for and begin the second phase of the Russian offensive operation. It is possible that the enemy will advance in the direction of Bolshoi Burluk in order to threaten the operational rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces defending in the Kupyansk direction.
Another priority for the enemy may be to expand the so-called buffer zone along the border, which will allow Russian cannon artillery to hit Kharkov and the surrounding area.
Let us remind you that the Russian army continues to raze the city of Volchansk in the Kharkov region. Local police say that Volchansk has not experienced such destruction as now even in 2022.
Evacuations are still underway – volunteers and police are removing civilians and animals every day. And the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fighting the enemy for every meter of territory.
