The Council of Europe is currently undergoing a discussion about making it a diplomatic platform to resolve the issue of a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression.
The Council of Europe has said the organization is ready to play its role in holding Russia accountable for its full aggression in Ukraine. In particular, a Damage Register is already in operation, which should record the losses and damages caused by Moscow. The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic-Burich, said this on Thursday, May 16, Ukrinform reports.
He emphasized that the creation of such a register is the first step towards a future compensation mechanism, in which the Council of Europe is “ready to play its role.”
Pejcinovic-Burich said that one of the organization’s main goals is to hold the Russian Federation accountable for its continued aggressive war and ensure additional support for Ukraine.
The Secretary-General called the 46-nation Council of Europe a unique organization that “continues to do good with arms in hand, with patience, determination and political will.”
“What visionary leaders started in 1949 will continue to work for the benefit of people across Europe and the world in 2024. Human rights, democracy and the rule of law are not a fixed destination. But it is a powerful goodness. It must always be harnessed and applied,” he concluded.
The city of The Hague in the Netherlands announced the technical launch of the international Register of Damage and the start of receiving applications from victims of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.
Earlier on Tuesday it was learned that the Diya application has started accepting applications for the Register of Losses. To apply, you must be the owner of the property and have a Survey Certificate from the local authority.
