German law enforcement officials on Thursday, May 16, conducted searches at the home of a right-wing populist political party Alternative for Germany Petr Bystron, which is the second party in the European elections. This was reported by the local publication Spiegel, citing its sources.
The Munich prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into Bystron. Searches were carried out in places associated with him in Berlin and Bavaria, as well as in Mallorca and the office in the Bundestag. The politician is suspected of corruption and money laundering.
The Bundestag agreed to the investigation and lifted Bystron’s immunity. Abstains only during voting Alternative for Germany.
Suspicions against the representative are related to the case surrounding the Voice of Europe media source, which acted as an instrument of Russian influence and propaganda in Europe.
Czech intelligence services said in March that the site was used to spread anti-Ukrainian propaganda and disinformation directed by Viktor Medvedchuk, on which the Czech Republic has imposed sanctions.
The media company may secretly provide financial support to candidates “convenient” for Russia in the European Parliament elections, especially to Bistron, who is the second number of his party in the European elections and often appears in Voice of Europe. Czech services have video and audio evidence that Bystron took such funds. The politician himself initially denied the accusations.
Bystron, while talking to journalists, complained that the German government coalition does not meet farmers in half, but gives Ukraine a large amount of military aid. He argued that the government “has money to kill people in other countries, but no money for German farmers.”
