He is in a life-threatening condition, so he is transported to a hospital in Banska Bystrica – Bratislava is too far away and this transport is too long and incompatible with the need for immediate surgery. This was reported on the official page of Robert Fico on Facebook.
“The coming hours will be decisive,” the message says.
The shooter who opened fire on the top official turned out to be a 71-year-old resident of the Slovak city of Levice. TV Joj writes that the motives for his action are still unknown, but the police are finding out. According to media reports, he fired from a short-barreled gun, “which was legally in his possession.”
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova has already responded to the assassination attempt on the Prime Minister. She condemned the “cruel and reckless” assassination attempt and admitted she was in shock.
“I wish Robert Fico much strength at this critical moment to recover from the attack,” she said.
And the situation in the Slovak parliament is now tense. After the assassination attempt, official Richard Gluck entered the hall and shouted to opposition deputies that it was their fault and they were responsible for it. And deputy Josef Prochko responded by saying that he was an official and he needed to behave accordingly.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called the attack on Fico “terrible” after a retreat of the Slovak government. In a statement on the social network X, he condemned the assassination attempt.
We strongly condemn this act of violence against the head of government of our neighboring partner state. Every effort should be made to ensure that violence does not become the norm in any country, form or sphere. We sincerely hope that Robert Fico will recover quickly and express our solidarity with the people of Slovakia, the statement said.
And Russian propaganda has already found a “Ukrainian trace” in this attempt on the life of the Slovak leader.
Let us remind you that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot after a government meeting in Handlov. The official could have received 2-3 balls and wounds in the stomach and chest.
