This is stated in a statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry published today, May 6.
It is noted that the so-called “Russian presidential elections” held in March were accompanied by Russia’s violation of the provisions of numerous international documents, which are the basis of the modern system of international relations, in particular:
- Charter of the United Nations;
- declaration of principles of international law;
- Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War;
- Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe;
- dozens of UN General Assembly resolutions.
In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes, the illegal organization of the so-called electoral process in the sovereign territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia with the deliberate attraction by threats and blackmail of millions of Ukrainian citizens living in the WTO or under duress to participate in it became an aggressive violation of generally recognized norms and principles of international law. moved to Russian territory.
The Foreign Ministry notes that such actions of the Kremlin regime indicate that:
- the leadership of the Russian Federation does not admit its responsibility and is not going to stop the illegal, unprovoked and unjustified full-scale armed aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on for more than two years and entails numerous casualties and destruction;
- Using propaganda and manipulation, the Russian leadership is using voter participation and voting results to justify military intervention in Ukraine and aggressive policies towards other states.
Based on the above, and also taking into account the current warrant of the International Criminal Court for the arrest of Vladimir Putin, Ukraine does not see legal grounds for recognizing him as a democratically elected and legitimate president of the Russian Federation, the Foreign Ministry emphasizes.
Ukraine also calls on other states, international organizations and the public not to recognize the results of the Russian false elections.
