However, Maradona’s family is now demanding that his remains be dug up and transferred to the Memorial del Diez mausoleum in the Argentine capital.
In a letter addressed to the court, the footballer’s relatives note that the mausoleum is “a much safer place than the current burial site” and that “all people should be given the opportunity to pay tribute to Argentina’s greatest idol.” So far, the court in Buenos Aires has not responded to this appeal.
Weeks before his death in November 2020, Diego Maradona underwent brain surgery. According to investigators, serious errors in home care were made afterward.
Because of this, a trial will begin on June 4, in which Maradona’s personal doctor Leopoldo Luque, the football player’s psychiatrist, and several other doctors are accused. Prosecutors accuse them of manslaughter. All suspects deny the charges. If convicted, they face up to 25 years in prison.
