The Supreme Court ruled that the former president did not violate the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits insurrectionists from holding high office.
The US Supreme Court allowed former President Donald Trump to participate in the Colorado primaries. This decision gives him the opportunity to be nominated as a candidate from the Republican Party during the election of the next head of state. CNN and Bloomberg reported this on Saturday, May 4.
The court ruled that Trump did not violate the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits insurgents from holding high office. Trump was accused of violating this amendment in the January 2021 Capitol storming case.
Also, the text of the US Supreme Court decision states that only Congress, and not the individual states, is responsible for enforcing the 14th Amendment.
The decision overturned a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that barred Trump from running for president again.
Trump himself has argued that attempts to block him from running would lead to “chaos and mayhem” if they were successful. In addition, the former US President denied that he was a participant in the uprising and argued that the 14th Amendment to the American Constitution does not apply to the position of head of state.
It will be recalled that in December of last year, the Supreme Court of Colorado banned Trump from running for president due to his role in the events of January 6, 2021, when the Capitol was stormed. The decision has not yet been made and could hinder Trump’s participation in the presidential election.
