A Colombian army Mi-17 helicopter carrying food for troops has crashed in the countryside of northern Colombia. Nine soldiers aboard the ship were killed. Associated Press reports.
The helicopter is delivering supplies to the municipality of Santa Rosa del Sur. The area has recently seen fighting between a guerrilla group of the National Liberation Army and a group of drug traffickers known as clan of the Gulf.
The military called the helicopter crash an accident. The crash of the Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter, which is often used to transport troops and supplies, occurred around 1:50 pm local time on Monday.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed regret over the death of nine passengers aboard an army helicopter.
The victims of the crash included two officers (two sergeants) and three privates. None of the helicopter passengers survived.
