The statement says the P-54 is the 29th mountain lion since 2002 to be killed by a car at a scientists ’research area that includes the Santa Monica Mountains, Simi Mountains, Santa Suzana Mountains, Verdugo Mountains and Griffith Park. The killed puma has ten radio collars.

But the death of the P-54 was particularly painful following the death of his mother, P-23, in 2018. The P-23 crashed and killed a car in January of the same year “not far away” in which he died. the P-23. -54. . After his death, animal rights activists said the incident reflects the need for more wildlife crossings on a crowded California highway.

“These large cats don’t match the network of roads, highways and distribution we’ve created with little consideration for its impact on lions or wildlife,” said JP Rose, a supporter of the Center for Biodiversity at the time. that is, in HuffPost.

P-54 and her siblings were about a year old when their mother was killed, about the times when mountain lion kittens usually leave their mothers and travel independently.

Although scientists were initially unsure how the kittens would grow, the P-54 evolved and eventually became a mother itself. However, it is believed that her first of three litters did not escape the first kitten and the two kittens in her second litter also died prematurely. One of them, Known as P-98 Killed in the woods after being attacked by a child in the backyard of a Los Angeles County home.

And two months ago, her second child, a P-97, was killed just like her mother and grandmother, albeit not in the same way, according to the National Park Service. A car ran into him on a freeway near downtown Los Angeles Getty. He is 18 months old.
