The quake killed at least 280 people. However, the death toll is likely to rise.

A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit Afghanistan on the night of June 22. It killed at least 280 people, injured more than 200 people. However, the death toll is likely to rise because the information comes from remote mountainous areas. This was reported by Al Jazeera and Reuters.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred about 44 km from the city of Khost, near the Pakistan border, at a depth of 51 km.

Most of the dead – in the province of Paktika. The victims are also located in Khost city and Nangarhar province.

Authorities reported that at least 100 houses were destroyed. The work continues to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters.

The quake was also felt in neighboring Pakistan. However, there were no reports of injuries or casualties from there.

It will be recalled that a magnitude 7.3 earthquake was previously recorded off the east coast of the island of Honshu in Japan. Its epicenter is at a depth of 60 km. Then four people died, more than 100 were injured.
