The reason is that the German defense company FFG receives spare parts for MRAPs from the USA, and assembles them only in Germany.
Germany broke off the supply of MRAP armored vehicles to Ukraine, where a deal was concluded with a German defense company. Bild reported this on Monday, April 22.
The German government has promised to transfer up to 400 units of heavy MRAP wheeled armored vehicles with improved mine protection to the Ukrainian military.
The contract for the supply of armored vehicles was signed by the Ukrainian authorities and the German defense company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH (FFG) with funding from the German budget for a total amount of 315 million euros.
The German Ministry of Defense said all of the armored vehicles were planned to be delivered this year.
The publication obtained a document from the defense department from September last year, which states that the MRAPs for the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be delivered in batches of 20 from January to October 2024. However, it has not yet started delivery.
According to the publication, the plan for 2024 was reduced first to 200 and then to 100 armored vehicles, and the start of deliveries was postponed from January to May-June.
The reason is that FFG sources MRAP parts from the US and assembles them in Germany. The company faced “license restrictions on exports from the US to Germany” and also had problems with mine protection certification.
It was previously reported that Germany is considering buying four additional Patriot air defense systems for $1.3 billion in addition to the four ordered by Berlin in March this year.
