Ukraine has the legal right to strike enemy military targets outside the country. In this context, shooting down enemy military aircraft over Russian territory is part of Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defense. Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg stated this during a press conference following a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council.
We must remember what it is. This is an aggressive war, when Russia attacks its neighbor, attacks Ukraine. Ukraine has the right to self-defense, and this also includes attacks on legitimate military targets outside Ukraine. Therefore, shooting down Russian aircraft that are used to attack Ukraine is part of Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defense, he noted.
Let us recall that on April 19, the Ukrainian military hit a Russian strategic bomber Tu-22M3, from which the Russian military was shelling the territory of Ukraine. The missile carrier was destroyed by anti-aircraft missile units of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in cooperation with the Main Intelligence Directorate. An enemy plane crashed in the Stavropol region of Russia.
The Main Intelligence Directorate stated that the Tu-22MZ was shot down at a distance of about 300 km from Ukraine using the same means that had previously hit the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft.
