EU member states have been asked to provide Ukraine with the most effective air defense system, said Josep Borrell.
EU member states could make concrete decisions on providing Ukraine with air defense systems, including Patriot systems, as early as Monday. This is what the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said following the first day of the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers on the island of Capri in Italy on Friday, April 19.
According to Borrell, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba “explained to us the situation in the country” related to Russia’s shelling of cities, civilian casualties and energy destruction.
“To prevent this in the future, it is necessary to strengthen the air defense of Ukraine. To this end, the member states were asked to provide air defense systems that, in particular, are most effective against supersonic missiles – the famous that Patriot – and any other systems. that will help them avoid destruction… I hope that on Monday at the meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs and defense – I called them in Luxembourg – it will be possible to make concrete decisions ,” Borrell said.
He noted that “some countries have already done this,” expressing hope “that others will do the same.”
“We must help Ukraine avoid destruction. Before we talk about reconstruction, we must talk about how to avoid destruction. It is always cheaper, less painful and more effective to prevent the destruction of a power plant electricity rather than restoring it. In addition, Ukraine, without electricity, will not continue to defend itself,” added the head of EU diplomacy.
It was previously known that Germany will transfer additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. The information was confirmed by President Vladimir Zelensky after a conversation with Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The previous day, information emerged that Germany had found six more Patriot systems for Ukraine.
