The plane was shot down as a result of a special operation by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in cooperation with the Air Force. This was reported by the GUR press service.
The enemy Tu-22MZ aircraft was shot down at a distance of about 300 kilometers from Ukraine using the same means that had previously hit the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft, the Main Intelligence Directorate noted. As a result of the defeat, the bomber was able to fly to the Stavropol area, where it fell and crashed.
This is the first successful mid-air destruction of a strategic bomber during a sortie during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
For every war crime committed against Ukraine, there will be fair retribution,” the GUR notes.
