Georgia has announced its intention to join NATO

Before that, however, the authorities plan to resolve all territorial problems with Russia, where diplomatic relations have been severed since 2008.

Georgia intends to join the North Atlantic Alliance. This was stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in his speech at the economic forum in Qatar, reports Georgia Online.

“Our motivation is to become a member of NATO. It depends on our strategic readiness and patience. We understand that NATO membership depends not only on our desire to join NATO, to provide membership in Georgia, the a consensus must be reached with all.member states of the Alliance.We are not naive, we understand that Georgia has territorial problems, which we must first resolve, and then join NATO.This is the opinion of our friends in Europe and NATO, ”the Georgia prime minister said.

He said the government’s policy was to restore the integrity and sovereignty of the territory through peaceful negotiations.

“We have not been in contact since we came to power. We have not had any political consultations since 2012, there are only trade and economic relations,” the prime minister added.

In 2008, after the invasion of South Ossetia, Russia recognized the independence of the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which Georgia and most UN members consider part of Georgia. Diplomatic relations with Russia were severed by Georgia on September 3, 2008.
