On April 15, the Georgian Parliament again began considering the high-profile bill on “foreign agents.” Hundreds of people gathered near the walls of parliament, they unfurled EU flags and posters “No to Russian law!”

Oppositionists, representatives of non-governmental organizations, winemakers calling on the “government of traitors” to resign, as well as some journalists are protesting. A large-scale action in front of parliament is meeting today at 20:00 Kyiv time.

In the parliament itself, a brawl has already occurred – the leader of the Citizens party, Aleko Elisashvili, attacked the representative of the parliamentary majority, Mamuka Mdinaradze, when he was presenting the bill.

In the spring of 2023, after the adoption of the bill on “foreign agents” in the first reading, protests by thousands took place in Georgia, accompanied by fights with the police. After this, the parliament rejected the bill “On the Transparency of Foreign Influence” in the second reading, and withdrew the accompanying document “On the Registration of Foreign Agents”.

Currently, the bill is practically no different from last year. As Mdinaradze said, only one change was made to it: instead of the term “agent of foreign influence,” it is proposed to use the wording “organization pursuing foreign interests.”

The ruling party believes that the adoption of the law will ensure the transparency of non-governmental organizations that finance extremism and revolutionary processes.
