In the city of Kiel in Germany, law enforcement officers discovered counterfeit currency worth more than $103 million. DW reported this on Friday, April 5.
According to police, the shipment of low-quality fakes was part of a wider operation to transport fake bills from Turkey through Germany to the United States.
Investigators traced the money after American security authorities tipped off the German federal police.
Schleswig-Holstein police said they conducted an “extensive search” of the apartment and the company’s two addresses in both Schleswig-Holstein and nearby Hamburg. As a result, four pallets containing a total of 75 boxes of counterfeit dollars were discovered and seized.
Investigators believe the banknotes came from a Turkish wholesaler who used one of the defendant’s export companies in the town of Ubeck in Schleswig-Holstein as an intermediate warehouse for onward transportation to the United States.
The suspect is being investigated in the money counterfeiting case. He is the managing director of two exporting firms and is suspected of having previously exported counterfeit currency across the Atlantic.
It is noted that fakes of this type are of poor quality and can be identified as fakes on detailed examination. However, the Bundesbank and US authorities have classified them as likely to be confused with real money in payment transactions.
