On Tuesday, the Latvian government decided to transfer 12 cars confiscated from drunk drivers in Ukraine free of charge, for the needs of the military administration of the city of Genichesk in the Kherson region, army units of the Ministry of Defense, the help of the Kharkov Valkiva center, the Kitaigorod village council, the municipal non-profit enterprise Lviv Territorial Medical Society and the Medical Institute National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. In Latvia, for driving a car while drunk (when the amount of alcohol in the blood exceeds 1.5 ppm), the car can be confiscated, or, if the driver is driving a car that does not belong to him, he must pay of an amount equal to the value of the vehicle.
The Sejm adopted amendments to the law on supporting the civilian population of Ukraine, which provides an opportunity to transfer state-owned vehicles free of charge to the ownership of the Ukrainian government to support Ukrainian society.
Latvia has repeatedly handed over confiscated vehicles to Ukraine, and now it has pledged to help restore the Chernigov region. More than five million euros will be allocated as part of the aid program.
Since February 2022, Latvian aid to Ukraine has reached more than 600 million euros.
