Thousands of people gathered in central Tbilisi for actions in support of Georgia’s European integration under the slogan Home, to Europe.
There are several police patrol units in the area of action. Traffic was paralyzed on Rustaveli Avenue. According to media reports, special forces were mobilized inside the government administration building. This was reported by the information portal News – Georgia.
So far, everything goes without incident. Representatives of different parties arrived without symbols, supporting the general civil nature of the action. Posters supporting imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili were noticed. The flags of Georgia, the European Union, Ukraine are everywhere.
Representatives of various fields joined the action. In parliament – people of different ages, many came with children. The owners of several popular restaurants announced in advance that they are open until 7pm today to go to the rally with their employees.
Students from thirteen universities in Tbilisi joined the action. At 19:00, the students gathered at the Philharmonic, where they all headed to parliament together.
Some of the students carried posters with protest inscriptions, for example – We demand deoligarchization, the West should impose sanctions on Ivanishvili and members of the Georgia government. Others are neutral.
Politicians from Europe and Ukraine are expected to speak at the rally. It should end with a procession in Europe Square in the historic part of Tbilisi.
The organizer of the action today is the Sirtskhvilia movement. The rally will be held three days before the EU announces its final decision on granting Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova the status of a candidate country for community participation. Its main purpose is to show how important the future of Europe is for the citizens of Georgia. At the same time, the organizers expressed their protest against the policy of the Georgian authorities, which, in their opinion, are not making enough efforts in the process of European integration.
It should be recalled that members of the European Commission have so far denied Georgia’s membership in the EU, because the country’s democratic state, in their opinion, does not meet Copenhagen standards, and the state must implement changes to obtain this status. .
