These are the results of an all-Ukrainian survey conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from February 17 to March 5, 2024.
Both men and women believe in astrology, psychic abilities and tarology. At the same time, the rate is higher among women (49% believe at least one of the list versus 36% among men).
The indicator grows from 26% of respondents under 30 years old to 51% among respondents 60+ years old. If among respondents with a high level of income 34% believe at least one of the list, among those with very low income – 65%.
Crisis and psychologically difficult periods (both at the social and personal levels) are a “favorable” environment for the growth of interest in such things as astrology, extrasensory abilities, and tarology. […] In addition, the explosive development of digital technologies and their strong penetration into people’s daily lives has made it much easier for residents to contact astrologers, soothsayers and the like, the study says.
Sociologists believe that it is inappropriate to stigmatize people who believe in astrology, etc., given the scale of the situation.
The basis of faith is quite complex, and it cannot be quickly dispelled by simple arguments (or even more so by ridicule). At the same time, the issue also requires attention, since many people in difficult circumstances may, under the influence of unscrupulous people, suffer significant losses or resort to destructive actions, the message says.
The questions for respondents were formulated as follows:
Some people believe in astrology, tarology, and psychic abilities. Other people don’t believe it. And what about you? Do you personally believe or not in…
Astrology is the influence of celestial bodies on the earthly world and man (on his temperament, character, actions and destiny) (INTERVIEWER, PLEASE NOTE NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH SCIENTIFIC ASTRONOMY)
Tarology – reading life / future using cards
Extrasensory abilities – clairvoyance, the ability to move objects with the power of thought, etc.
The survey was conducted using telephone interviews. 2008 respondents aged 18 years and older, living in all regions of Ukraine (except Crimea), were surveyed. They interviewed citizens of Ukraine who at that time lived on the territory of Ukraine, which was controlled by the government of Ukraine. The sample did not include residents of territories that are temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, and the survey was not conducted with citizens who traveled abroad after February 24, 2022.
Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 2.4% for indicators close to 50%; 2.1% for rates close to 25%; 1.5% for indicators close to 10%; 1.1% for rates close to 5%.
As the Institute of Mass Information reported, Ukrainian media for the period February 24, 2022-January 16, 2023 published more than 21.8 thousand materials with the predictions of psychics, astrologers, tarologists, molfars, numerologists and mediums. In total, they received more than 150 million views.
Among the top media with such content are Obozrevatel, Zaxid. Media, Telegraph.com.ua, UNIAN and Znaj.ua. The most mentioned “experts” were astrologer Vlad Ross, psychic Max Gordeev, psychic and tarot reader Lyudmila Khomutovskaya.
