German law prohibits the manufacture of weapons for future use; it requires the approval of the country’s government.
The head of the German subsidiary of the Taurus missile manufacturer, the European concern Matra BAE Dynamics Aerospatiale (MBDA), Thomas Gottschild said that Germany has suspended the production of Taurus cruise missiles. He said this in an interview with Augsburger Allgemeine.
According to him, the current German law prohibits the production of weapons for future use; it requires federal government approval based on mandates.
“The production line for the Taurus, the equipment and the corresponding halls are still in place. We can start the production of the Taurus at any time. But for this we will need a new order for this weapon,” said by Thomas Gottschild.
According to him, “the defense industry cannot do miracles,” that is, after receiving an order, deliver within a very short time.
“That’s why, when talking to politicians, we always point out how dependent we are on the orders that are planned for us,” said Gottschild.
He also emphasized that “the defense industry needs long-term orders.”
As you know, on February 22, the Bundestag decided to recommend that the German government provide Ukraine with long-range weapons.
The final decision rests with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. However, the latter does not include the possibility of moving Taurus to Ukraine.
