Pope Francis has called on Ukraine and Russia to conduct a prisoner exchange in an “all for all” format. He said this on Sunday, March 31, after the Easter mass at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, addressing the faithful with the traditional Easter message and Urbi et Orbi (City and World) blessing.

“May the Risen Christ open the way to peace for the suffering population of these regions (Ukraine, Israel, Gaza Strip – ed.) Calling for respect for the principles of international law, declaring I present my demands for a general exchange of all prisoners between Russia and Ukraine: all for all!” Francis said.

He said that “war is always absurd and defeat.”

“Let us not allow the winds of war to grow stronger in Europe and the Mediterranean. Let us not surrender to the logic of arms and rearmament. Peace is not built by arms, but by reaching out our hands to each other and opening our hearts,” added the Holy Pope.

Let’s remember that in a recent interview, Pope Francis said that Ukraine “must have the courage to raise the white banner.” His words caused a great resonance, both in Ukraine and around the world.

Later, the press service of the Holy See explained that the Pope did not mean surrender, but a return to negotiations.

And the Kremlin said it was “sympathetic” to Francis’ remarks.
