Bulgaria and Romania will become members of the Schengen area on Sunday, March 31. The press service of the European Commission reported this on Saturday, March 30.
“The Commission fully welcomes this achievement, which follows the historic decision of the Council in December 2023. The entry of these two Member States into the Schengen area will make the common area more attractive by significantly expanding the largest common area in the world without internal border controls,” it said..
It is reported that by the end of 2024 the Council of the EU must decide on setting a date for the abolition of checks at internal land borders between Bulgaria, Romania and other Schengen countries.
Let’s remember that at the end of last year it was reported that the EU approved the phased integration of Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen zone.
In the past, Croatia joined the Schengen area.
