In the long term, the participating countries of the tank coalition and the coalition of armored vehicles will help create the future armored fleet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and establish a modern industrial cooperation in Ukraine.
In Europe, coalitions of armored vehicles were created in support of Ukraine. The first meeting of participating countries took place in Warsaw.
What kind of coalition
At the meeting, they developed a joint position on strengthening the technical fleet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with several types of armored vehicles and organizing a system for their repair, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported .
Within the framework of the coalition, four syndicates were created, each of which was assigned a different task: supplying weapons and ammunition for Western armored vehicles; maintenance and repair; training of personnel and technical personnel; developing effective tactics for using armored vehicles on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian delegation in Warsaw is headed by the Deputy Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Ivan Gavrilyuk.
“The Coalition of Armored Vehicles aims to strengthen the armored shield of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, through joint efforts to increase the capabilities of our troops in the fight against the Russian aggressor, to ensure the effective operation, maintenance, and repair of the equipment and weapons given to us by our allies,” Gavrilyuk emphasized.
In the long term, the participating countries of the “tank coalition” and the “coalition of armored vehicles” will help create the future armored fleet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and establish a modern industrial cooperation in Ukraine.
Polish idea
The creation of a coalition was initiated by Poland and Germany.
“This is one of the most important coalitions ever created, we are the two leading countries in this project, and other partners such as the UK, Sweden and Italy have joined,” said Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Regulusbright delivery
Coalition member countries are actively supplying armored vehicles to Ukraine. For example, Germany transferred the Leopard 2 A6 tank to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The supply of spare parts for all Leopard 2 depends directly on the work of German companies. Berlin also transfers Marder infantry fighting vehicles and Dingo armored vehicles on an ongoing basis.
Poland donated Leopard 2 A4 tanks and a large number of Soviet-style tanks. Poland also supplies armored vehicles such as the Rosomak to Ukraine. And Leopard tanks are undergoing repair and restoration in Poland.
Sweden, in addition to Strv 122 – a version of Leopard 2A5, provides CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, the production of which, based on localization, Ukraine is interested. The UK is a supplier not only of Challenger 2 tanks, but also of Mastiff armored vehicles and other MRAPs.
Italy supplied Iveco LMV armored vehicles.
Will expand
According to military experts, the coalition of armored vehicles will only expand in the future; it is quite reasonable to expect France, which is a supplier of VAB armored personnel carriers, and AMX-10RC wheeled vehicles, to join. And so is Spain, which becomes the largest donor of the Leopard 2, while relying solely on its own strength.
Other coalitions
The UK, along with Latvia, led the drone coalition.
As a member of the coalition, the UK will increase and streamline the West’s provision of FPV drones to Ukraine, which have proven highly effective on the battlefield, providing operators with situational awareness to engage enemy positions, armored vehicles and ships.
