European Union countries around the world are collecting ammunition for Ukraine as part of a Czech initiative.
Germany is about to transfer 10 thousand artillery shells to Ukraine. The head of the Ukraine situation center at the German Ministry of Defense, Major General Christian Freuding, announced this on Wednesday, March 27, in an interview with DW.
According to Freuding, Germany decided to send ammunition to Ukraine in three stages. The shipment of 10,000 rounds of ammunition that was about to arrive was the first step of the plan.
The second phase involves supporting the Czech initiative to buy ammunition outside of Europe. Within its limits, Berlin will finance the purchase of 180 thousand shells, which Ukraine will receive in the second half of 2024.
Finally, the third phase concerns a bilateral agreement between Germany and a third country, which Freuding refused to name, to supply another 100 thousand shells to Ukraine “from approximately the fourth that quarter.”
Christian Freyding added that in order to successfully repel Russian attacks, Ukraine above all needs “artillery shells, ammunition and missiles for modern air defense systems, as well as armored combat vehicles. “
He also spoke about the training of fighters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Germany. According to him, Germany trained 10 thousand Ukrainian military personnel in 2023, and in the first months of this year – another 3 to 4 thousand.
We remind you that the German defense concern Rheinmetall is investing 300 million euros in a new ammunition production plant.
